Transcription: In order to crack the Axis stronghold of Germany, Italy needed to be taken by the Allies. The Italian forces had proven practically useless during the war, so Hitler had ordered his generals to occupy most of the country, and it was these forces that met the combined American and British amphibious offensive at Salerno. German resistance proved strong, but could not stave off the Allied liberation of Rome.
